Elder Justice and Safety in Tribal Communities

This presentation will introduce you to a variety of resources from the International Association for Indigenous Aging that are designed to help you address elder justice, safety, and well-being in your community. We will be highlighting a valuable community resource titled “Creating a Tribal Safety Net to Address Wandering Persons,” also known simply as The Wandering Toolkit. Developed with input from the community, this toolkit serves as a practical and culturally relevant resource that provides strategies for recognizing, preventing, and responding to the wandering of Indigenous elders living with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD).

This tool is more than just a safety guide; the toolkit blends Indigenous knowledge with modern techniques for understanding and addressing wandering. It empowers communities to care for their elders in a way that respects both cultural values and real-life experiences. Additionally, it is designed to be adaptable to various Indigenous nations and urban contexts.
