A Growing Demand for Our Services

During the first six months of 2026, our helpline received 1,514 calls and provided assistance to 875 primary persons. These numbers represent a 25% increase of calls and a 37% increase in primary persons served over the same time period in 2025.

The Minnesota Elder Justice Center (MEJC) is seeing an increase in callers to our helpline. As of June, call volume is up 25% over the same time period last year. People are finding their way to us most often through trusted partner referrals. Strains across partner organizations, changes in medical and hospital systems, and resource gaps leave people searching far and wide for support. As one team member put it, “Everybody is struggling to meet people’s needs.”

These calls are increasingly complex and require a holistic approach. Determining whether MEJC has a role to play takes time, careful assessment, and deep listening. Our team approaches these calls with expertise and compassion. Whether that means providing safety planning, connecting someone with a partner, or simply helping identify a path forward, our work begins by listening to what older adults and their families are experiencing.

These trends point to something bigger than an increase in calls. They reveal increased strain in the systems meant to support older and vulnerable adults. Addressing these concerns requires sustained investment in resources that meet people where they are. MEJC will continue listening, responding, and advocating for older adults while working alongside partners to build a more connected and responsive safety net.
