Coerced Debt

Effective January 1, 2024, Minnesota law authorizes a debtor to request that a creditor cease all collection activity on a coerced debt. A coerced debt results from use of the debtor’s personal information without the debtor’s knowledge, authorization, or consent, or from another form of economic abuse. Qualified third-party professionals may provide documentation to support the debtor’s request. MEJC staff attorney Laura Orr will offer an overview of the law’s potential applications to circumstances of elder abuse, an explanation of the term “qualified third-party professionals,” and how these professionals may proceed in helping people seeking relief from coerced debt.
